Exclude Your Own Traffic (IP Exclusion)

Stop counting yourself — so every number in your dashboard is a real customer.

Your own visits can badly skew a small site’s analytics — especially while you are actively working on it. If your site gets 40 real visits a day and you open it 25 times while tweaking a page, your numbers are telling you more about your work habits than your customers. IP Exclusion fixes this: tell Crafty Meerkat which IP addresses are yours (an IP address is the internet address of your connection), and visits from those addresses are never counted.

Exclusion works at two levels. Per site, in that site’s Settings, for addresses that should only be ignored on one site. Account-wide, in your Account settings, covering all your sites at once — the right choice for your own office or home connection, and a genuine time-saver for an agency managing a dozen client sites: exclude the studio’s address once instead of twelve times.

You don’t need to know your IP address to use this. Both levels offer a one-click “Exclude my current IP” button — click it from your office and your office connection is excluded; click it from home and home is covered too. Manual entry is there for addresses you know, like a VPN or a second location. Either way, the effect is immediate: excluded visits are dropped at collection time and never counted, never stored, never mixed into your history.

How it works

When a visit arrives, Crafty Meerkat compares the visitor’s IP address against your exclusion lists — the site’s own list plus your account-wide list — before recording anything. Matches are dropped on the spot. This happens at collection time, which means excluded visits never touch your data at all, rather than being counted and hidden later.

Exclusion applies from the moment you add an address. Visits recorded before that stay in your history, so the earlier you set it up — ideally right after installing the snippet — the cleaner your numbers are from day one.

Step by step

Exclude yourself on one site
Open the site in your dashboard and go to Settings. In the IP exclusion section, click “Exclude my current IP” — your current connection is added instantly.

Or exclude yourself across every site
Go to Account settings and use the same one-click button there. Account-wide exclusions cover all your sites, present and future — set it once and forget it.

Add other addresses manually
Use manual entry for addresses you are not currently connecting from: your home connection while at the office, a VPN, or a colleague’s address.

Verify it worked
Open your website in a normal browser tab, then check Live Traffic View — your visit should not appear. That silence is the confirmation.

Tips from the den

◆Click “Exclude my current IP” from each place you regularly work — office, home, favorite coffee shop — since each connection has its own address.
◆Most home internet connections change their IP address occasionally. If your own visits start reappearing in the live feed, just click the button again.
◆Working with a developer or agency on your site? Ask for their office IP address and add it too — their test visits skew your data exactly like yours do.

Common questions

What is the difference between per-site and account-wide exclusion?

Per-site exclusion (in a site’s Settings) ignores an address on that one site only. Account-wide exclusion (in Account settings) ignores it across every site you own. Use account-wide for your own connections and per-site for addresses that only relate to one project.

Will excluding my IP remove my past visits from the data?

No. Exclusion applies from the moment you add the address — visits recorded before that remain in your history. That is a good reason to set it up right after installing the snippet.

How do I find my IP address?

You don’t need to. The “Exclude my current IP” button detects and adds the address you are currently connecting from in one click. Manual entry is only needed for addresses you are not using right now.
