Visitor Names & Session History
Friendly names instead of ID strings — click one to see the whole journey.
The easiest way to improve your website is to watch how real people actually move through it — and that is hard when every visitor is an anonymous string like “a91f3c…”. Crafty Meerkat gives every visitor a friendly, memorable name instead: “Dashing Falcon”, “Roaming Otter”. Suddenly your Recent Visitors table reads like a story you can follow, and “that Falcon from the newsletter came back and read three more pages” becomes a sentence you can actually say.
Names are generated deterministically from each visitor’s anonymous session hash — a one-way code that cannot be traced back to a person. The same visitor always appears under the same name, but no personal data is collected or stored to make that happen: no real names, no emails, nothing identifying.
The names are the doorway; the session history behind them is the payoff. Click any visitor name — in the Recent Visitors table or the live feed — and their full history opens: every page they viewed, time on page, scroll depth, and the referrer that brought them, grouped by session. It is the closest thing to sitting beside a customer while they browse your site.
How it works
When a visit is recorded, Crafty Meerkat derives a friendly name from the visitor’s anonymous hash — the same hash always produces the same name, which is why “Dashing Falcon” stays “Dashing Falcon” across pages and return visits. Because the name comes from a hash rather than any personal detail, there is nothing to reverse: the name identifies a browsing pattern, never a person.
On Growth and Agency plans, a persistent first-party visitor ID means returning visitors keep their name across days, so you can recognize multi-day journeys. Starter plans use a daily rotating fingerprint hash, so names reset each day.
Step by step
- 1
Find a visitor worth following
On your Analytics page, scroll to the Recent Visitors table — or watch names arrive in Live Traffic View. Look for interesting patterns: a visitor with many page views, or one arriving from a campaign you are testing.
- 2
Click the name to open their history
The session history shows every page that visitor viewed, in order, grouped by session — with time on page, scroll depth, and the referrer that started each visit.
- 3
Read the journey, not just the pages
Ask what the path is telling you. A law office might see “Curious Heron” land on a blog post, jump to the services page, then leave from Contact without submitting — a strong hint the contact form deserves a look.
- 4
Watch for returning names
On Growth and Agency plans, the same name reappearing across days means a genuinely interested visitor. Several returning names circling your pricing page is a pattern worth acting on.
Tips from the den
- ◆When a metric looks odd — a spike in bounce rate, a dip in conversions — open two or three recent session histories. Real journeys explain numbers faster than any chart.
- ◆Follow a few sessions that arrived from each marketing channel: visitors from search often behave very differently from visitors from social, and the difference should shape your landing pages.
- ◆Talking through a puzzle with Stats Chat? Session-level behavior like “people leave after the pricing page” is exactly the kind of observation it can help you dig into.

Common questions
Can a visitor name be traced back to a real person?
No. Names are generated from a one-way anonymous hash. Crafty Meerkat never collects names, emails, or other personal details, and raw IP addresses are never stored — so there is nothing that could link “Dashing Falcon” to an individual.
Why did a visitor’s name change?
On the Starter plan, visitors are identified with a daily rotating fingerprint hash, so the same person gets a new name each day. Growth and Agency plans use a persistent first-party visitor ID, so names stay stable across days and return visits.
Where can I click on visitor names?
Anywhere they appear — the Recent Visitors table on your Analytics page and the Live Traffic View feed both link every name to that visitor’s full session history.
