Google Search Console Connection

The searches that brought people to you — and the ones you nearly won.

Your analytics can only see people who already arrived. There is a step before that it cannot see at all: somebody typed something into Google, your site appeared in the results, and they chose one of the other nine. No visit happened, so no tracking snippet ran, so nothing was recorded. Those near-misses are usually the cheapest traffic available, and most website owners never learn about them.

Google records all of it in Search Console, and connecting it takes one click. Once linked, Crafty Meerkat pulls the searches, how often you appeared, how often people clicked, and where you typically rank — then joins it to what those visitors did once they arrived.

The most useful thing on the page is **Quickest Wins**: searches where you already show up but do not get the click. If you rank eleventh for something with four hundred impressions a month, one improvement to that page moves you onto page one — and the page already exists. If you rank third and almost nobody clicks, the ranking is fine and your title and description are the problem. Those are different jobs, and knowing which one you have saves a lot of wasted effort.

How it works

You sign in with Google and pick which verified property matches the site. We request one permission — read-only access to Search Console data — and nothing else. We cannot change a property, submit a sitemap, request indexing, or see any other Google service.

Every night we fetch the most recent data and store our own copy, so the page loads instantly and the AI advisor can read search data in the same breath as everything else. Google publishes this data about two days late and revises it for several days after, so each sync re-reads an overlapping window rather than only yesterday.

Disconnecting removes our access immediately. The history we already collected stays in your account, because it is your record of how the site performed — not a cached copy of Google’s.

Step by step

  1. 1

Verify your site in Search Console first

If you have never used Search Console, set it up at search.google.com/search-console and verify you own the site. Crafty Meerkat can only read properties your Google account already has access to.

  2. 2

    Open Search in your dashboard

Select your site, then Search under "Getting found". Click Connect with Google and approve the read-only permission.

  3. 3

    Pick the matching property

Search Console properties are written as either a full address or a domain. We put the likely match first — pick the one that matches this website and we backfill 90 days straight away.

  4. 4

    Start with Quickest Wins

Work down that list before anything else. Each row is a page you already have, for a search you already appear in — far cheaper than trying to rank for something new.

Tips from the den

  • A page with lots of impressions and a low click rate has a title problem. A page with clicks but a high bounce rate has a content problem. Reading the Search page next to your Analytics page tells you which one you are looking at.
  • Positions 8–20 are the sweet spot. Below that and one edit rarely moves the needle; above it and you already have the click.
  • The most recent two days are always missing. That is Google, not us — do not read a fresh dip as a drop in traffic.

Common questions

Can Crafty Meerkat change anything in my Google account?

No. We request a single read-only permission for Search Console and nothing else. There is no technical way for us to alter a property, submit a sitemap, request indexing, or reach any other Google service — the permission we hold does not allow it.

Why do the numbers differ from my analytics?

They measure different things and will never match exactly. Search Console counts clicks on a Google result; analytics counts people who arrived and ran the tracking script. Somebody who clicks and leaves before the page loads is a click and not a visit. Use search data for how you are found, and analytics for what happens next.

Which plans include this?

All of them, including the free plan. It costs us nothing to call Google, and search query data is the single most useful thing a small site can be shown — putting it behind a paywall would help nobody.

My property list is empty. Why?

The Google account you connected has no verified properties. Verify the site in Search Console first, then reconnect. If somebody else set it up, ask them to add you as a user on the property.
