Referrers / Traffic Sources
Where your visitors were the moment before they found you.
A referrer (or traffic source) tells you where your visitors came from before arriving at your site. When someone clicks a link on another website, their browser passes along the address of the page they left — that address is the referrer. Common referrers include search engines like Google, social media platforms, other websites that link to you, and email campaigns.
Referrers answer the single most valuable marketing question a business owner has: which of my efforts actually brings people in? If your dashboard shows Google sending 214 visits, a local blog’s review sending 67, and Facebook sending 12, you know where your next hour of marketing effort belongs — and where it does not.
Understanding your traffic sources helps you allocate marketing budget and effort to the channels that drive the most valuable traffic. Crafty Meerkat breaks down referrers in your dashboard with real-time data, and separately detects visits from AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini — an increasingly important source that generic referrer lists lump into noise.
How it works
The Referrers card on your Analytics overview ranks every source by visits for your selected date range, and the Live Traffic View shows each arriving visit’s referrer in real time — useful for watching a social post or newsletter land. When a browser sends no referrer (typed addresses, bookmarks, most email apps), the visit is counted as direct traffic instead. For links you share yourself, campaign links with UTM tags give far more precise credit than raw referrers, because they name the exact post, email, or ad.
How to put it to work
- 1
Rank your channels honestly
Open the Referrers card for the last 30 days. The top three sources are your real marketing engine — often not the channel you spend the most time on.
- 2
Check quality, not just quantity
Filter your analytics by a referrer and compare bounce rate and goal conversions. A source sending 40 visitors who convert beats one sending 400 who bounce.
- 3
Tag your own links
Referrers cannot tell your two Facebook posts apart. Use the Campaign Links wizard to add UTM tags to every link you share, so each post, email, and ad reports separately.
- 4
Nurture the sources you didn’t create
When an unfamiliar site appears in your referrers, visit it. A blogger or directory already sending you traffic is often glad to feature you more prominently if you ask.
Tips from the den
- ◆Watch the AI Traffic card alongside referrers — visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other assistants signal your site is being cited in AI answers.
- ◆A referrer spike from one domain usually means a mention or link went up that day; find it, thank the author, and pin an annotation to your chart.
- ◆Expect some under-reporting: privacy settings strip referrer information from a share of visits, which then land in direct traffic.

Common questions
What is the difference between a referrer and a UTM source?
The referrer is what the visitor’s browser reports automatically — just the domain they came from. A UTM source is a tag you add to links you share, naming the exact campaign. Referrers happen to you; UTM tags are placed by you, and they are far more precise.
Why does traffic from my email newsletter show as direct instead of a referrer?
Most email apps are not web pages, so clicks from them carry no referrer and land in direct traffic. Add UTM tags to newsletter links (the Campaign Links wizard builds them for you) and those visits will be credited correctly.
Can Crafty Meerkat tell which AI assistants send me visitors?
Yes. Visits referred by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, Grok, Meta AI, Le Chat, You.com, Poe, Kagi, and Phind are detected automatically and shown per assistant in the AI Traffic card.
