Geolocation
Where your visitors are — and what that tells you about your next move.
Geolocation in web analytics is the identification of a visitor’s geographic location, typically at the country or city level, based on their network address at the moment they visit. It tells you where your audience actually is — which is often different from where you assume it is.
Knowing your traffic geography turns vague hunches into decisions. A law office in Austin that discovers 30% of its visits come from San Antonio has just found its next ad market. An online store seeing steady German traffic has a reason to add EU shipping details. Geolocation data drives choices about localization, ad targeting, store hours in your contact info, and even where to host your site.
Crafty Meerkat shows your geographic breakdown as an interactive visitor map with a country heat map and city-level dots, plus Top Countries and Top Cities lists — so you can rank your audience geography at a glance and watch it shift as your marketing reaches new places.
How it works
When a visit arrives, Crafty Meerkat looks up the visitor’s approximate location from their IP address (the network address every internet connection has) at collection time. Only the resulting country and city are kept — the IP address itself is never stored. The location feeds your visitor map, the Top Countries and Top Cities lists, and the live feed, where each entry shows where that visitor is browsing from.
The accuracy is city-level, not street-level. Geolocation can tell you a visitor is in Chicago; it cannot tell you their neighborhood, and it collects no personal details about them.
Tips from the den
- ◆Check your Top Cities list before spending on local ads — the cities already finding you organically are usually the cheapest ones to grow.
- ◆If a country you do not serve appears in your top five, make sure your shipping, service-area, or language expectations are clear early on the page.
- ◆Watch the map after a campaign launches: a spike in the right region is fast confirmation your targeting worked.

Common questions
How accurate is geolocation data?
Country-level accuracy is very high. City-level accuracy is good but not perfect — VPNs, mobile carriers, and corporate networks can place a visitor in a nearby city or a network hub. Treat city data as a strong pattern indicator rather than an exact address; over hundreds of visits the picture is reliable.
Does geolocation identify individual visitors?
No. Geolocation places a visit at the country or city level only. The IP address used for the lookup is never stored, and no names, emails, or other personal details are collected. You learn that someone in Denver visited your pricing page — not who they are.
Where do I see location data in the dashboard?
On your Analytics page you get the interactive visitor map (Countries, Cities, or Both views) plus ranked Top Countries and Top Cities lists. The Live Traffic View also shows the location of each visit as it happens, and you can filter your whole dashboard by country.
